by Zahra Mukadam 01 Apr 2024

As National Walking Day approaches, there's no better time to lace up your shoes, breathe in the fresh air, and embark on an adventure through the picturesque landscapes of the United Kingdom. From the rugged coasts to the tranquil woodlands, the UK boasts an array of trails suitable for every level of walker. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just starting out, there's a path waiting for you to explore. In this post, we'll highlight five easy trails from different corners of the UK.

South Downs

The South Downs Way, South East England:

Stretching across 100 miles of stunning countryside, the South Downs Way offers panoramic views of rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and picturesque villages. One particularly accessible section is the walk from Amberley to Arundel, which spans around 6 miles. Along the way, walkers can admire the charming village of Amberley and its historic castle before reaching the majestic Arundel Castle, nestled amidst the South Downs.

Hadrian's Wall

Hadrian's Wall Path, North East England:

Step back in time and walk in the footsteps of ancient Romans along Hadrian's Wall Path in the North East of England. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a relatively easy trail with breathtaking views of the rugged Northumberland countryside. One recommended section is the walk from Housesteads to Steel Rigg, covering approximately 4 miles. As you traverse the rolling hills and ancient ruins, you'll be immersed in the rich history and natural beauty of the region.

Lock an Eilein

Loch an Eilein, Cairngorms National Park, Scotland:

Escape to the breathtaking landscapes of the Scottish Highlands with a walk around Loch an Eilein in the Cairngorms National Park. This easy circular trail, spanning roughly 4 miles, encircles the tranquil waters of the loch, offering glimpses of ancient pine forests and the ruins of a 13th-century castle. With its relatively flat terrain and stunning vistas, Loch an Eilein is a perfect destination for a leisurely stroll amidst nature's splendour.

Tarka Trail

The Tarka Trail, Devon, South West England:

Named after the famous otter in Henry Williamson's novel, the Tarka Trail winds its way through the picturesque landscapes of North Devon. One particularly scenic section starts from Braunton and follows the route of the old railway line to Meeth, covering approximately 11 miles. Along the way, walkers can enjoy panoramic views of the River Taw Estuary, lush green meadows, and tranquil woodland, all teeming with wildlife.

Ullswater The Lake District

Ullswater Way, Penrith, Lake District, England:

Nestled in the heart of the Lake District, the Ullswater Way offers a quintessentially British walking experience with breathtaking views at every turn. One of the easier sections of this circular trail is the stretch from Glenridding to Howtown, spanning around 7.5 miles. As you wander along the shores of Ullswater, England's second-largest lake, you'll be treated to panoramic vistas of towering mountains, cascading waterfalls, and serene valleys.

On National Walking Day, let's celebrate the joy of exploring the great outdoors and reconnecting with nature. Why not pop in to the nearest TOFS on your way home to grab yourself a well-deserved treat. Whether you're seeking coastal cliffs, rolling hills, or tranquil lakeshores, the UK offers a diverse range of trails to suit every taste.
