We can always rely on our screens to provide us with some much-needed laughter and escapism. However, finding what to watch can be a pain-staking job flicking through hundreds of options. This lively musical biography covers the short life of the singing sensation Selena Quintanilla, following her rise from low-paying gigs to multi-platinum album sales. Based on the comic book by Jeff Lemire, Sweet Tooth is set ten years after a viral pandemic that killed most of the population, but somehow led to babies being born with part human, part animal characteristics. It follows Gus, a half-deer hybrid boy, who leaves the wilderness in search of his mother. The boy’s journey sheds light on the cause of the plague, and what happened to humanity. Line of Duty

If you've not jumped on the line of duty band wagon yet, then get aboard. A gripping police drama following the work of AC-12, a police anti-corruption unit, returned to our screens this spring. The show centres around Steven Arnott, a detective who is transferred to AC-12 from counter-terrorism after a delicate operation goes badly wrong. Each set of six episodes covers a different case of potential police wrongdoing and gripping tension that makes it perfect for binge-watching. Season five is on Netflix, with the first four and six on BBC iPlayer.

The Ride

Based on the true story of BMX champion John Buultjens, this story will tug on your heart strings. After a violent, racially charged incident lands John in juvenile detention, he is finally placed with an unlikely set of foster parents, an interracial couple. They make it their mission to overcome the challenges of John's white supremacist upbringing, slowly beginning to forge a relationship through their foster son's fascination with BMX biking. A re-telling of the classic French story about Arsene Lupin, the world-famous gentleman thief and master of disguise returns with the gripping fifth episode. Watch as he sets out to avenge his father for an injustice inflicted by a wealthy family. Available on Netflix.

Never Have I Ever

Coming of age comedy drama created by Mindy Kaling. The drama follows Devi, as she attempts to improve her social status in high school while simultaneously dealing with her (almost literally) crippling grief of her Father’s heart attack. The series is laugh-out-loud funny, and has been widely praised for its South Asian representation and for breaking Asian stereotypes. Available on Netflix.

Unforgotten

Featuring the critically-acclaimed actress Nicola Walker and actor Sanjeev Bhaskar, long time friends Cassie and Sunny returned to our screens this summer with series 4 of the dark British crime drama. Cassie is forced to return to the police force to solve a cold murder case after an unidentified body is found in a freezer, although things take a dark turn as we say goodbye to a major long-standing character. Life In Colour

One for nature and animal lovers! An interesting three-part docuseries featuring renowned David Attenborough depicts the world the way animals see it. Shot in exotic locations across the planet, the series emphasizes how colour affects a wide variety of creatures as they hunt, eat and mate. Available on Netflix.

Mare of Easttown

Starring the award-winning Kate Winslet, Mare Sheehan, an office police investigator in a small Pennsylvania town, investigates a brutal murder as she tries to keep her life from falling apart. The series explores the dark side of a close community and provides an authentic examination of how family and past tragedies can define our present. Available on Amazon Prime.

Clarkson’s Farm

Okay, just hear me out… This series sees Jeremy Clarkson, the broadcaster famous for Top Gear who ranges somewhere between obnoxious land old bore, demonstrate humility and a touching softer side. It follows Clarkson's decision to purchase a 1,000 acre farm in the English countryside, and to run it himself despite a lack of farming knowledge. Watch him take on the challenge through extreme weather, limp crops and Covid. Available on Amazon Prime Video.
